Chandrasekhar (Sarath Babu) is married to Mala (Santhakumari) and their marital life is miserable due to Mala's demonic behaviour. Chandrasekhar's sister Viji (Suhasini), who is brought up by him, is enthusiastic, naughty and fun-loving. She lives life on her own terms. One day she bumps into Ram (Mohan), a mechanic. Despite initial conflicts, they slowly become friends. Though good natured, Ram suffers from an inferiority complex and suspects everyone. Mala suspects that Chandrasekhar's classmate Ramya (Vanitha) is his concubine since he visits her often. Chandrasekhar learns of Ramya's love for him only after his marriage to Mala. Ramya remains single and they share a platonic relationship, which antagonises Mala. Pratap (Pratap K. Pothen) is a photographer and a distant relative of Chandrasekhar. He comes to Chennai from Calcutta and works for an agency. Though Pratap likes Viji, he does not propose to her.

The film revolves around Vasanth (Prashanth), a stock analyst, and his wife Malini (Meena). The two are in search for a flat in Chennai. Vassanth finds the perfect place on the 12th floor of a high-rise apartment building. However, the apartment has a horrifying past. The previous occupant of the flat, a young woman Manju who had killed her child and jumped from the balcony and died. The film opens into the life of Appala Narsaih (Gollapudi Maruthi Rao), an ordinary middle-class man who makes a simple living as a Central Government clerk. His family, a typical South Indian joint family, includes his dutiful wife Godavari, his oldest son Prakash (Sarath Babu), a junior officer at Indian Oil, and his wife Uma (Suhasini), his second son Ragava (Rejendra Prasad), a factory worker, his youngest son Bharath (a never do good fellow who has failed his high school exams twice) and his daughter Sarojini (Kalpana). The modest income from his government job barely provides for his family's needs. His sons contribute some amounts in proportion to their incomes. The family gets by, but Appala Narsaih worries for the future. Prakash and Sarojini are not yet married, and Bharathi has a bleak future if he does not graduate high school. Sarojini is a particular worry; her beauty and charm are matched by her arrogance and contempt. She summarily rejects any marriage proposal, and her obstinate demeanor causes great concern to Appala Narsaih. Appala Narsaih nonetheless plows on through life hoping for solutions to his difficulties.

Arukkani (Suhasini Maniratnam) is an illiterate village girl and her father is upset to not find her a groom. One day, her father meets his old friend Bhoothalingam and shares his sadness, Bhoothalingam proposes his son to marry her and Arukkani's father accepts. Murali (Mohan), Bhoothalingam's son, is an handsome man and also a successful sales manager. He doesn't see his future wife yet and he is excited to see her. At his marriage's day, Murali is shocked to see his future wife Arukkani who is ugly and gets married with her anyway. Murali feels very disappointed and cannot bear her. He takes a transfer to Bangalore leaving his father and his wife. In Bangalore, he gets friendly with his colleague Julie (Radha), who is modern and good-looking. They fall in love with each other and they get married. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.
