It was India's first film to be released in 70mm and was extensively shot all around the world, as the title suggests. A romcom, it featured Raj Kapoor as an Indian who travels around the world on 8 dollars. The film also starred Rajshree, Ameeta, Om Prakash, and Mehmood.
The sum of 8 dollars refers to the number of dollars, or an equivalent foreign currency, that an Indian was allowed, by Government rules, to obtain by converting rupees into foreign currencies.

The film deals with the story of two sisters—Mohini and Roop—both played by Nargis—the legal one raised by a courtesan and the illegal child. Mr. Raj K. Saxena (Kader Khan) is known for his parsimony. Everything he does and thinks is valued with money, and ways he can accumulate it. His daughter, Kiran (Ameesha Patel), is the opposite, a spendthrift. Mr. Saxena borrows money from elderly people, assuring them of returning the loan with a handsome rate of interest after about 20 years, knowing fully well that none of them will survive 20 years. Then he meets with the son of one of such lender, aptly named after him viz. Raj K. Saxena (Aftab). Mr. Saxena refuses to repay the amount, swallows the proof, the only evidence, and asks Raj to get out, which he does so. Raj is determined to get his money, and wants Kiran to fall in love with him. Kiran does so, and brings him over to introduce him to her shocked and speechless dad. Things change when Raj inherits a large amount of money, ironically left by Mr. Saxena maternal grandmother, and it is Mr. Saxena who is now anxious to get in the good books of Raj, with hilarious results.

Raj Kumar is an honest, handsome and intelligent young man. He works as a sole trader and being a painter trade, he is unable to earn a living and unable to pay rent to his kind-hearted but talkative landlady Mrs. D'sa. One day Raj finds a wallet containing money and returns it to the owner Mr Ramnath. Ramnath admires Raj and pleased with his honesty, employs him to work in his office as a clerk. Raj meets with Ramnath's maidservant Asha and soon both fall in love. This all ends when Raj finds out that Asha is really Aarti, the niece of his employer. Unfortunately, his landlady dies consuming medicine manufactured by his employer Mr Ramnath and she passes away suddenly leaving Raj Kumar alone. The police conducts a post-mortem and as a result find out that Mrs. D'sa was poisoned. Raj became the prime suspect and is subsequently taken for questioning and is arrested and held in a cell. In the trial that he faces, however, Ramnath reveals the truth and thus Raj is saved.
