Set in the royal court of Janakgarh, the film opens with the palace coup led by the villainous Mangal Singh, resulting in the deaths of the king and queen. Princess Kamala (Madhubala) and her sister are spirited out the court and given over to a family of untouchables. Le jeune Babul (Suresh) a repéré une annonce sur un mur du Roop Mahal, le théâtre local dont Meena (Pramila) est la vedette. Shanno (Nutan) is devoted to Lord Krishna alias Kanhaiya, and often wanders off alone in the woods dancing and singing to the flute notes of her Kanhaiya. She accidentally meets Kanhaiya (Raj Kapoor), the village drunk and falls in his arms assuming him to be her ‘Kanhaiya’ – Lord Krishna. The gossip spreads that Kanhaiya and Shanno are having an affair, and in order to stay in the same village, they must get married. Shanno, still under the misconception regarding Kanhaiya is thrilled and gives her consent. During the marriage Shanno is shocked when she realises who "Kanhaiya" really is - the town drunk and idler who has taken advantage of her love for Lord Krishna, and now insists on marrying her. What the Village Panchayat does when Shanno refuses to marry Kanhaiya and is even ready to light herself on the funeral pyre to prove her piety, and how they cope when the village is swamped with plague, forms the basis for the rest of the story.

L'histoire se situe au XVI siècle dans l'Empire moghol. Envoyé sur le champ de bataille pour affermir son caractère, le prince héritier Salim, revient au palais impérial auréolé de quatorze années de guerres victorieuses. Accueilli avec fierté par son père, l'empereur Akbar, et avec amour par sa mère, la reine Jodhaa Bai, il retrouve avec plaisir la douceur de la cour. Il y tombe follement amoureux de la danseuse Anarkali dont il veut faire sa femme. Soucieux des intérêts de l'empire, Akbar rejette violemment cette mésalliance, emprisonne la jeune femme et la condamne à mort. Le prince s'oppose alors à son père, lui contestant le droit de régir ses sentiments comme il le fait du pays. Il fait évader Anarkali, la cache et se rebelle, entraînant une partie de l'armée avec lui. L'affrontement se solde par la victoire d'Akbar qui se résout à faire exécuter son fils unique. Anarkali se livre alors à l'empereur pour sauver l'homme qu'elle aime.

The small Vijaykumar lives with his sick and widowed father of Mohanlal under poor conditions. As an honest shopkeeper, he deserves the wherewithal to provide himself and his son.
