Palayam Murukan (Manoj K. Jayan) is the underworld goonda leader ruling Palayam market in Kozhikode City. He hails from an aristocratic family and enjoys a good academic background, but got into the crime world during his college days. He was expelled from his house by his sister (Bindu Panicker) after getting jailed for a murder. In alliance with Mayor Swamy (Narendra Prasad) and assisted by the muscle power of his trusted hench man Dosth Vishwan (Sidhique), Murukan becomes the most powerful person of the city. His activities include mediating land deals, arranging hartals for political parties and murdering for a cause. On the personal side, he enjoys a deep rooted friendship with Dosth, and also he sponsors his adopted sister(Chippy) on her medical studies and is loved by the people of Palayam market.

Sudhi and Anu are siblings, studying in a boarding school in Ooty. Their parents are separated and they never saw their mother, whom they always long to see. When they come on vacation to their father’s (Vijay Bhaskar - Mammootty) home, they make an attempt to bring back their mother by going on a fast for an indefinite time. Even though this attempt fails, Vijay is forced to give a brief description of the physical appearance of their mother. They also know that their mother lives somewhere in Bangalore.

Swami Amritananda (Mohanlal) arrives in Kerala on a mission to bring peace at the state, which is burning with communal riots. Deserted by his mother, teenaged Raju is adopted by Beeranikka, a Muslim ferryman. Raju soon starts accompanying Beeranikka in ferrying people. One day, he meets a young girl who is returning to her native town Kozhikode after the death of her mother. The girl invites Raju to Kozhikode where she would be staying with her father and uncle. Not interested in leaving the ferrying job, Raju rejects the invitation. A few days later, he finds himself in possession of an ornament which he thinks belongs to the girl. He travels to Kozhikode to return the ornament and finds the girl after many days of search. The girl does not recognise Raju and says the ornament does not belong to her. Disheartened, Raju returns to the ferry.

The story takes place in a hillside village, terrorised by the frequent attacks of a man-eating leopard. Chandran (Mammootty) is a truck driver and Ravi ( Mukesh), the cleaner of the truck. Chandran is very affectionate towards Ravi, for whom, Chandran is like an elder brother. Chandran spends most of his leisure time in booze and women, while Ravi is busy in saving all the money, as he has got a family. One day, Ravi gets a letter from Remani (Jalaja), his wife saying that there is festival in the village temple set to happen for the coming Friday and she requested him to be there .Excited Ravi sets out to his home with all the cash he has saved as he has plans to build a house and to be there for at least two months. But on his way back home, he was killed in an accident. Chandran arrives at the village of Ravi, with his dead body. He finds out the miserable condition of his family and decides to stay for a few days to financially assist Remani and help her fulfill Ravi's dream house. But during his stay, he gets involved in several social issues. He slowly joins the job of ferrying sand under Kochu Varkey, a rich businessman of the area. But, with time, he enrages Kochu Varkey (Prathapachandran) and his son Sunnykkutty (Vijayaraghavan), invites animosity from them. Rajamma ( Seema), a bold and independent lady who makes a living by running a tea stall falls in love with Chandran, but certain unexpected incidents happen in the life of Chandran that turns everything upside down.
